Historical
Sites
If you enjoy visiting sites of historical significance then Islay will not disappoint.
The Finlaggan Trust have a visitor centre at Ballygrant where medieval remains
exist. This site was the ancient seat of the Lord of the Isles and is well worth
a visit.
A must see is the Kildalton Cross (see Photo Gallery link) which is
located in the grounds of Kildonnan Church in the south east of the island and
is the only complete Celtic High Cross in Scotland.
A walk to the cliff tops
on the Mull of Oa will reveal the American Monument built to commemorate the
loss of two American ships which sank in nearby waters at the end of the First
World War. This monument can be seen from many viewpoints on the Rhinns of Islay
due to it’s prominent cliff top location. Other places worth a visit include
the Iron Age Hill Fort at Dun nosebridge south of Bowmore and the Ballinaby Standing
stone on the north west side of the island.
