Trips
If you fancy a trip to other islands in the area why not take the ferry across
to Jura or slightly further up the Sound of Islay to Colonsay. A short ferry
trip from Port Askaig takes you across the Sound to Jura. Jura or ‘Island
of Deer’ as it is otherwise known has it’s own world renowned distillery
which is worth a visit but the Jura House Walled Garden is probably thee most
popular visitor spot. Jura is more mountainous than it’s neighbour Islay
and is made famous by its two prominent peaks known as the Paps of Jura which
are visible from all over Islay let alone Jura. The island has a huge red deer
population hence the name and golden eagles also breed here.
Colonsay can also be reached by taking a ferry from Port Askaig. The crossing
is longer but worth a trip never the less. Due to its size a popular way of exploring
Colonsay is by bicycle and it is a good idea to leave your car on Islay and take
your bike on the ferry.
