About
Islay
If
you like the great outdoors and all that comes with it then the
beautiful Island of Islay or ‘Queen of the Hebrides’ as
it is otherwise known is the place for you. Breathtaking scenery
in the form of dramatic rugged coastline, serene sea loch estuaries,
unspoilt sandy beaches, mountainous terrain and picturesque villages
are all features of many of Scotland’s Hebridean Islands
you might say, but throw in unique wildlife, a links golf course,
excellent roads for cycling and seven world famous working malt
whisky distilleries and you have Islay.
So what do you like to do in the great outdoors?
Walk? Cycle? Pony Trek?
There are some great areas to walk on the island, favourites include
the wide expanse of sandy beach at Machir Bay on the west side of the
island, a circular walk around Ardnave Point on the west side of Loch
Gruinart or at Killinallan on the east side, a walk along the cliff
tops to the American Monument on the Mull of Oa or along the ‘Big
Strand’ at Laggan Bay. It goes without saying that visitors should
respect the countryside code paying particular attention to closing
gates behind them. Sheep and cows roam certain areas of the island
and care should be taken when encountering them especially during calving/lambing
season. Also stag stalking takes place in certain areas from July to
October and the hind cull continues until February. Information giving
details of these areas is available by calling (0496 810810).
Due to its small population the island’s roads and particularly
the B class roads are pretty quiet and as a result offer the opportunity
to explore all the nooks and crannies of the island by bicycle in relative
safety. Gradients are slight so minimal effort is required. The west
side of the island (known as the Rhinns) in particular has some fantastic
roads with breathtaking scenery. The road around Loch Gorm in the north
west and the back road from Portnahaven to Port Charlotte in the south
west are two of the most scenic. Bikes can be in Port Charlotte directly
across the road from the Port Charlotte Hotel. Be sure to wave to all
oncoming traffic!
If horseback is more your thing you have a choice of both Rockside
Farm near Machir Bay (Tel.01496 850231) or Ballivicar near Port Ellen
(Tel.01496 302251). Both offer beach riding and rides are tailored
to suit ability.
