Arriving by sea
There are 2 ports on Islay – Port Ellen and Port Askaig. Both are used
for arrivals and departures so care should be taken in establishing which one
is being used for a particular crossing. The crossing to Kennacraig on the mainland
takes about 2 hours. Timetables and prices can be obtained by clicking on www.calmac.co.uk
Port Ellen is the further of the two from Saddlers Brae (approx 20 miles) with
Port Askaig slightly nearer at approx 16 miles.
Directions
When arriving at Port Ellen take a left turn out of the terminal and follow the
A846 north for about 4 miles until you pass the airport on your left hand side.
Then follow the directions as detailed for arrival at the airport.
When
arriving at Port Askaig take the steep winding road up the hill
from the terminal and continue for some 8 miles on the A846 in
a south-west direction passing through the village of Ballygrant
to the village of Bridgend. You will now be looking for a right
turn signposted for Portnahaven. Take this turning you are now
on the A847. This road will wind down the other side of the loch
for some 8 miles until you reach the village of Port Charlotte.
The road will narrow on entering the village to cross a bridge
then you will see The Port Charlotte Hotel on your left. Take the
3rd turning on your left after the hotel. This turning is just
before the bus shelter and goes down the hill towards the lochside.
Saddlers Brae is the last house on your right. |
